Brooklyn Decker had only acted in one film, "Just Go With It," when she was cast in the action movie "Battleship" and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model-turned-actress says she had to audition four times before sitting down with director Peter Berg.
"Battleship" is based on the popular board game of the same name. In the film, an international fleet of ships on earth come in contact with alien ships who attempt to take over the planet. Decker's character, Samantha Shane, is the daughter of Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson) and a physical therapist who falls for Lieutenant Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch), a US Navy Tactical Action Officer with a rebellious streak.
"So I had auditioned for this part four times - I was actually shooting in Hawaii while I was auditioning," Decker told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith. "I was sending in my tapes and on my fifth audition I actually met Peter Berg."
"I went in and he said look, 'This movie has aliens' -- which I had no idea because I wasn't allowed to read the script - and he's like, 'In order to get this part I want to see snot bubbles coming out of your nose and I want you crying and screaming, fearing for your life of this alien - like this alien is trying to steal you and your boyfriend and I'm like, 'What? There's aliens?' I'm like, 'Okay, I got to make this happen.' And snot bubbles came, tears came, the screaming came and somehow I got 'Battleship.'"
"Battleship" also stars Alexander Skarsgard of "True Blood" fame and Rihanna, who makes her acting debut in the film. So does Gregory D. Gadson, who plays an Army veteran and double amputee named Lieutenant Colonel Mick Canales. Gadson served as colonel in the U.S. Army for over 20 years and is a double amputee and motivational speaker. Decker, 25, shares many scenes in the film with him."His face alone is so powerful," Decker said. "You know, he lost both of his legs in Iraq in 2007 and he weighs 220 pounds with no legs, if that tells you how big of a guy he is. So he's quite intimidating and he plays the character really well."
"It was his first movie, my second and we bonded quickly. I mean, we're still friends," she added. "To be able to shine a light on him and guys like him who are heroes, it was just really special. It made it really sentimental for all of us. "
Decker will also be seen in the romantic comedy "What to Expect When You're Expecting." Both that film and "Battleship" hit theaters on Friday, May 18.
