Dennis Rodman was recently ordered to complete 104 hours of community service after being found guilty of contempt for failing to pay child support in 2010.
The 51-year-old retired NBA star had faced up to 20 days in jail. His ex and third wife, Michelle, with whom he has two children, had stated in court documents filed in March that Rodman owes $808,935 in back child support and $51,441 in back spousal support. His attorney had denied this and added that the basketball player is "broke and cannot afford any additional fees."
On Tuesday, Rodman was ordered to complete his community service hours by the end of October. He must also return for a hearing in a court in Orange County, California on June 22 to face a second contempt charge, OnTheRedCarpet.com has learned.
"In all honesty, Dennis, although a very sweet person, is an alcoholic," Peggy Williams, his financial advisor, told the Los Angeles Times. "His sickness impacts his ability to get work."
Rodman has battled alcoholism for years. His attorney has said that "it is absolutely untrue that Mr. Rodman failed to pay child or spousal support" and that he had "always provided support to his family to the best of his ability and will continue to do so."
Rodman also has another child, a daughter, from his marriage to first wife Annie Bakes. They wed in 1992 and divorced a year later. He and actress Carmen Electra wed in 1998 in Las Vegas. He filed for annulment after nine days. They divorced after a few months. Rodman married his third wife in 2003.
Rodman, touted as one of the greatest rebounders in basketball, retired from the NBA in 2000. He later became a wrestler. Now 50 years old, Rodman makes money mostly via television and publicity appearances. He appeared on "Hulk Hogan's Celebrity Championship Wrestling" in 2008," "The Celebrity Apprentice" in 2009 and "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" in 2010.
